What happens at a marriage green card interview at a field office?
An officer reviews your application and asks questions about your forms and your relationship. You and your spouse usually go together. The officer may also question you separately. The questions often cover how you met, your wedding, your home, your daily life, and your money. You answer out loud, and the officer may follow up on any detail you give.
USCIS policy does not allow phone, video, or audio recording in field offices. Since May 18, 2026, USCIS says lawyers and accredited representatives must attend field office interviews in person, except in limited cases. Read the USCIS field offices page for the current rules, and ask your lawyer what to bring.
What questions might the officer ask?
No list can tell you the exact questions. These are four of the 91 practice questions. Each page says what the officer may be checking and lets you answer out loud for free.
- Were any of your spouse's family members unable to attend? How did you include them, if at all?
- Do you share any insurance policies, such as health, auto, or life insurance?
- Where did your spouse work when you first met?
- Do you have any questions about the next steps after today's interview?

What if the officer questions you and your spouse separately?
Some couples are asked to come back for a second interview where each spouse answers alone. This is often called a Stokes interview. Each spouse should be able to answer from their own memory. The Stokes interview guide explains how it works and how to prepare honestly.
